How to Make Frosting from Freeze-Dried Fruits

March 30, 2024 by Jodi Weiss 2 Comments

Did you know you can make homemade frosting from freeze-dried fruits and vegetables? You can avoid all of the artificial dyes and flavors and make these amazing light colored icings that are full of natural flavor.

I just bought a tub of vanilla but you can make your favorite home-made icing recipe for this too. For small amounts the ratio is about 1/4 cup of frosting to 1 tablespoon of fruit powder.

I use fruits and veggies from Thrive Life and always stock up on whatever is on sale that month to get the best deals!

How to Make Frosting from Freeze-Dried Fruits

Step 1: Choose your frosting flavor
Pick a fruit that will net the color you are hoping to achieve. These will not be vibrant bright colors but more of a pale shade. The more powder you use the darker the color will be. If you are using vegetables to achieve certain colors don’t use TOO much (no one wants pea-flavored cookies). Here are a few color suggestions that work well:

Light yellow: Mango, banana or Pineapple
Dark yellow/orange: Peaches, sweet potatoes
Light pink: Strawberries
Dark pink: Raspberries
Magenta: Dragonfruit
Light purple: Blueberries
Light green: Peas

Step 2: Powder your fruits (or veggies)
Use a blender, ninja or bullet mixer, food processor, or a rolling pin to grind your fruits into a fine powder. The finer the powder the easier it will be to spread the icing. If you have a few little chunks it’s ok because they add an extra flavor burst, but you can always sift the powder first to avoid that.

Step 3: Combine powder with icing
Incorporate the fruit or veggie powder into your frosting adding 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach the desired color/flavor. You can use a hand mixer or simply stir well by hand.

Step 4: Frost and enjoy!
Once your frosting achieves your desired color you can use it like any normal frosting. It will have a slight hint of flavor, especially if you went for a richer color. This is so fun for any holiday because you can mix and match with so many combinations of colors! I even made colored cookies for our superbowl party last year!

    Hi!
I am looking for uses of lyophilized fruits.
Could you include the quantities or proportions you use for this recipe, please?

Fruits: Common dried fruits include raisins, apricots, dates, figs, and apples. They retain most of their nutritional value and are often sweet, making them a popular snack and ingredient in various dishes
