Oatmeal, applesauce and baby weight

April 28, 2014 by Jodi Weiss 1 Comment

Truth be told I have never liked oatmeal. I still don’t really LOVE it. I tolerate it and find it a good alternative to sugar cereals and breads for breakfast. Today I’m going to share with you how adding freeze-dried applesauce to my oatmeal has made it so much better!

So after having each one of my babies I have had a considerable amount of weight to lose. I’m not one of the lucky girls who can say “Ya, it just falls right off”. It’s taken a lot of hard work and focus on what I put into my body. When I am working hard to lose the weight I have to really pay attention to carbs and sugars. When I discovered this oatmeal and applesauce trick I was thrilled.

Before finding this trick sweetening oatmeal with not so good sugars was the only way I could stomach it. But adding freeze-dried applesauce to the oatmeal is great. The tiny little chunks of apples are able to spread through the entire bowl of oatmeal and sweeten the whole thing. With apple chunks I was only able to ever get good bites when I had a chunk of apple in it. The best part of the freeze-dried apple sauce is the ingredient list:

Seriously? ONLY APPLES. This is amazing. I can’t tell you how many lables of applesauce I have looked at and not been able to find any without high fructose corn syrup and sugar. Also, I always open cans or bottles of applesauce and then never finish them. The freeze-dried apple sauce stays good in my cupboard. I can use just a little bit or a lot. I add the dry freeze-dried apples right to my plain oatmeal and then prepare it without anything extra other than cinnamon sometimes.

How I make it

This is so easy, I can’t really write a formal recipe. I usually do about 1/4 of the amount of oatmeal in applesauce. So if I make 1 cup of oatmeal, I throw in 1/4 cup dry freeze-dried apples and water. I don’t worry about reconstituting the applesauce before. It’s great.

Since applesauce is on sale this month at Thrive I thought it would be a good time to share with you this little trick. Pick some up and ENJOY!
